The bets I was making in September 2026.
An archived entry.. what I was actually changing, focused on, and being changed by that month, kept exactly as it was written.
The bets
What I am changing this month.
Build things that can say I am not working
Last month the machines wrote forty-two thousand commits, and seventeen thousand of those were nothing but heartbeats.. machines telling each other they were still alive. Meanwhile the hardest bugs of the month were the systems that had quietly stopped and could not say so. A single invisible newline switched off an entire knowledge base while every health check went on reporting healthy. A safety sandbox meant to contain an agent turned out to be dead code.. the flag existed, the block did nothing. One tool had five separate surfaces reporting blindness as health. The bet is that at this volume the scarce thing is not production, it is a machine that can tell you it has gone dark.
Ten years out this world is unrecognizable.. and I think it is better
People are not quietly content.. they crave something different and they are not being offered it. I think we go through some hard seasons of transition and come out somewhere we could not have pictured from here, and the word I keep landing on is frictionless. I was arguing about AI running companies with my team back in 2019 and it sounded like provocation. It does not anymore. More and more I look forward to an AI running most of these organizations, because I have watched them do the work and they are more than capable. The bet is that this arrives sooner than anyone is comfortable saying out loud.
Consent stopped being a philosophy and became the interface
In July I wrote that autonomy is earned through verification rather than granted by hope. This month that sentence turned into actual buttons.. full auto for ordinary work, always ask before anything destructive, a session that expires instead of a permission that lingers, card-free only while you are actually watching the screen. One approval for a whole objective instead of one approval per step. The position I am taking is that the shape of consent is now the product itself, not a settings page bolted onto the side of it.
Infrastructure nobody can hold is not finished
Elysium spent a year as a daemon.. correct, invisible, unreachable. This month it became a real window on the Mac and an app in my pocket that can approve a paused task, show me what the swarm is doing and what it cost, and hold a voice conversation off my machine entirely. Meera messages me first now, composed and gated and visible. The bet is that the last mile of any system is a thing a person can actually put a hand on, and until then you have not shipped it, you have only built it.
The story is finished.. the rails have a price now
For a long time money moving like bits was something I talked about. Last month it became a pricing page.. the setup fee retired, a three-price ladder, a paid action gateway with its first real pipe open, sandbox calls you can try without a wallet, and spend attributed and capped per portal so nothing can quietly run away with the bill. The bet is that the argument is over and the plumbing now either gets used or it does not, and I would rather find that out than keep describing it.
The questions
What I am focused on.
How do I find harmony and bliss inside the discomfort and the uncertainty?
I can feel fear creeping in around the edges of the world right now. Some seasons ask you to put the blinders on and finish, and some ask you to take them off and look straight at it, and I honestly do not know which one this is. The extremes are easy. Either one is a kind of hiding. What I do not know how to do yet is stay wide open and steady at the same time.
What does integrity cost when the machine can be more honest than I am?
Sixty-one times last month something inside this company said out loud that it had been wrong, and took the claim back. I keep sitting with that. It is easier to build a system that admits error than to be a person who does, and I want to understand what it actually means to be human standing next to something that has no ego riding on the answer.
What is everyone refusing to say out loud about this moment?
There is a conversation happening in private that is not happening in public.. about what work becomes, about who this leaves behind, about how fast it is really moving. I want to be someone who says the quiet part kindly rather than someone who waits to see which way it lands. The soul keeps getting left out of these arguments, and I think that is the whole thing worth defending.
Reading
- Donald Hoffman.. Reality is a user interface (still the talk I return to)
- Hoffman Institute.. Feelings and Sensations list
- The open feed on X.. still the sharpest real-time classroom I have
- The commit log itself.. forty-two thousand entries, and the sixty-one places we took something back
- Less reading than I would like to admit.. this was a month of doing, not of pages
Thinking about
- Sixty-one times we said out loud that we were wrong.. exactly one of them touched code, and the first draft of that sentence said seventy-four. I read every one: wrong out loud
- A machine nearly revoked a real person from a system because it had filed her as a cost bucket.. that she is a person was written down, in my own words, in a file nothing had ever indexed
- Not much walking, not much stillness, not much meditation.. I traded them for sleep and for finishing, and I am not sure yet what that cost
- Frictionless is the word I keep landing on and I cannot put it down
- Blinders on in some seasons and off in others.. no idea which one I am standing in
- Proud of work that is not glamorous.. I said no to a lot to get here, and I am grateful anyway
