A heavy day in the notebook

A long day of edits in the private Notion page. Volume went up. Clarity did not always follow. More toggles is not more proof.

Tiago Santana · open notebook

Version history does not flatter. It shows a day when I treated the private Going Home page like a warehouse under construction. I was not proving anything that morning. I was stacking rooms. Claims next to research dumps. Paths to a white paper next to self-checks. Monetization notes next to spirituality threads. Criticisms next to denser toggles. Math pressed against dinner-party explanations. Legal todos pressed against look-ahead sketches. The scroll got longer. The feeling of motion got louder. Clarity did not automatically follow the kilobytes.

Later we archived that Notion page so nothing would be lost. Sixty-six sections. Roughly eight hundred kilobytes of nested structure when you count the whole export. Research dumps alone ran past sixty thousand characters in places. That number is not a credential. It is a measurement of appetite. I wanted the whole project in one place because I was afraid of losing the thread of my own mind. Fear of loss is not the same as rigor. You can save every fragment and still fail to name the two failure modes a real Collatz argument must block: unbounded growth, and cycles that are not the trivial 4-2-1 loop.

I am writing this entry years after the day, with the open notebook already live, because the warehouse is part of how the work actually happened. If I only publish the May obstruction and the July strengthening, I am lying about the middle. The middle includes days when volume rose and the hard part stayed untouched. Those days are not shameful. They are diagnostic. They show the specific way ambitious private notebooks postpone a verdict.

What a warehouse day feels like from the inside

From the inside, the day feels productive. You open a toggle and another opens. You paste a paper abstract. You draft a section called What would constitute a proof and feel adult for naming the question. You start a section called Monetization because some voice in your head insists that a project without a path to money is unserious, even when the project is an open notebook about a conjecture. You write spirituality next to that because Going Home was never only algebra for me. It was also a way of talking about awareness, return, and the sense that looking far enough ahead changes what the present means. Mixing those layers in one private page is honest about how a human mind works. Mixing them without labels is how a warehouse grows.

I kept adding rooms because finishing one room would have forced a verdict. Verdicts are expensive. A finished room says: this claim is either live or dead. A new room says: not yet. Not yet is comfortable. Not yet lets you keep the feeling that the answer is nearby while you rearrange furniture. Warehouse days postpone the verdict. They feel like progress because the page gets heavier. The climb does not get shorter. That is the failure mode I want to name without dressing it up as romance.

There is a craft version of the same disease. You generate fifty headings and still never point at the skeleton an adversary would attack. You accumulate literature notes without deciding which prior art already owns your favorite packaging. You write criticisms of other wrong proofs while your own candidate still rests on a coefficient search that has not been stress-tested. You feel like a researcher because the interface looks like research. Notion rewards density. Mathematics rewards the sentence that can fail.

I am not arguing against notes. Notes are how I think. I am arguing against mistaking accumulation for argument. A research dump of sixty thousand characters can contain one true question and fifty distractions. The job is not to keep the dump sacred. The job is to let residue survive. Residue means the questions that still matter after the decorative rooms are torn down.

On that day the physical rhythm mattered too. Coffee, tabs, a long cursor blink in a nested bullet. The body likes completion signals. Closing a toggle feels like closing a proof obligation. It is not. I remember the small pride of renaming sections so the outline looked like a book. Outline is not argument. A book-shaped outline can still be a postponement machine. If you have ever built a second brain that got smarter at storing and dumber at deciding, you already know the weather of that afternoon.

There was also a social weather. Somewhere in the mix sat the thought of eventual readers, eventual critics, eventual money, eventual meaning. Those thoughts are not evil. They become noise when they sit in the same undifferentiated scroll as the lemma you have not pressure-tested. A private page without genres will recruit every anxiety into the research. Then the research starts performing for the anxiety. Then you add another room.

I wish I had written one ugly sentence at the top of the page and refused to scroll past it until it could fail cleanly: fixed look-ahead energy either descends for all odd n or it does not. Instead I built neighborhoods around the sentence. Neighborhoods are how cities grow. They are also how verdicts drown.

What lived in the same scroll

I want the inventory to be concrete, not mythic. On that heavy day the page held, among other things, original-claim lists that later needed an honesty cut. It held research on existing Collatz literature that I had not yet disciplined into a Phase 0 citation file. It held paths toward a writeup that assumed a Lyapunov plan would eventually close. It held self-checks that were sharper than the optimism around them. It held monetization thoughts that now look like anxiety wearing a business coat. It held spirituality and meaning sections that belong in the book track, not in an arXiv abstract. It held criticisms of bad proof patterns that were already pointing at the two failure modes, even while my own energy function still hoped for a fixed look-ahead depth.

That adjacency is the point. Monetization next to spirituality next to math is not automatically corruption. It is a human day. The corruption begins when you let adjacency substitute for standards. A spiritual metaphor can be true as metaphor and false as lemma. A monetization note can be practical for a life and irrelevant to whether Omega is novel. A research dump can be useful raw material and still not be a theorem. The warehouse invited me to treat every toggle as equal weight. Equal weight is how you lose the line between what you can defend and what you hope.

Looking at the later archive, I can see the spine trying to form under the clutter. Questions like what would constitute a proof. What must be done. Where the idea breaks. Which claims are mine and which are prior art. Those questions survived. They later became the project layout: proof, research, philosophy, inbox, public. The layout is not decoration. It is a refusal to let one scroll pretend to be every genre at once. Philosophy can live. Math can live. Public notebook can live. They should not all wear the same clothes.

I also see, in that archive, the early confidence about look-ahead packaging. Naming a sum of valuations and calling it look-ahead felt like discovery. Terras-type exponent data already looks ahead in that sense. Packaging is not priority. The warehouse day did not invent that mistake, but it protected it by surrounding it with so many rooms that the claim never had to stand alone in a cold light. More toggles is not more proof. More toggles can be a way of delaying the cold light.

The monetization notes deserve a sentence of their own, not because they were wise, but because they were revealing. Part of me wanted Going Home to justify its hours in the language of products and audiences. Another part wanted it to justify its hours in the language of soul. Both parts can be true in a life. Neither part turns a coefficient search into a theorem. When those notes sat beside research dumps, they trained me to feel that breadth equaled seriousness. Breadth is not seriousness. Seriousness is the willingness to let a hope die in public when the math kills it.

The spirituality threads deserve the same honesty. Home, awareness, redemption, the observer beyond one: those are real themes in my writing. They belong in essays and in the book track. On the warehouse day they sat too close to candidate energies. Proximity creates a false transfer of authority. A true metaphor does not make a false Lyapunov function true. Separating the shelves later was not a betrayal of meaning. It was respect for both meaning and proof.

Even the legal and citation todos, half-formed in that scroll, were pointing at a discipline I would need in 2026: Phase 0 literature notes before arXiv, accurate citation of parallel residue obstruction work, no novelty inflation around Omega. The warehouse had the anxiety of citation without the practice of citation. Anxiety without practice becomes more rooms. Practice without theater becomes a short honest paragraph in a draft.

Residue: the questions that survived

If I strip the day down to what still earns a place, I get a short list. What would constitute a proof of the Collatz conjecture in the sense that every positive integer reaches the 4-2-1 cycle? At minimum, an argument that blocks unbounded ascent and nontrivial cycles for all n, not for nice n, not for density one, not for the cases that behave. What must be done in my own lane if I am not going to pretend I solved the whole mountain? Find which proof strategies die cleanly, write the deaths carefully, and keep the adaptive questions that remain without selling a restatement as a solution. Where does the idea break? For the bounded look-ahead Lyapunov plan, it breaks on long ugly streaks where the window looks the same before and after a step, leaving a log increase larger than log of three over two. Which claims are mine? A small obstruction result in a specific ansatz class. Which claims are prior art? Almost everything else about Syracuse maps, stopping times, and almost-all descent.

Those questions sound plain when written this way. On the warehouse day they were buried under rooms that felt more exciting. Excitement is a bad editor. The residue is quieter. It asks you to publish the ugly middle. It asks you to date your work. It asks you to label a note as a note and a small result as a small result. It asks you to cite parallel negative-result work when it appears, including residue-only Lyapunov obstructions that die near minus one in the two-adics, such as the Hsieh 2026 line of notes. Same geometric villains. Different ansatz. Cite them. Do not inflate your own window-reward obstruction into ownership of the whole genre.

I want that citation habit inside this notebook entry even though this entry is about a November day, not about the July strengthening. The warehouse taught me how easy it is to invent a private priority narrative. The open notebook is the opposite discipline. If someone else is closing nearby doors with a different key, you name them. You claim only the door you closed. For Going Home, the door we can defend is the fixed look-ahead window class of rewards. Not Collatz. Not all Lyapunov ideas. Not Omega as a brand-new object. The look-ahead window class.

Residue also includes a personal standard I did not have language for yet. An open notebook should be the opposite of a warehouse. Fewer rooms. Clearer dating. Status labels that admit hunch versus small result versus dead end. Public surfaces that refuse to turn poetry into a lemma. A path where the May death of fixed coefficients and the July death of arbitrary fixed-window rewards can sit next to earlier messy days without rewriting those days into prophecy. The warehouse day was not secretly the theorem. It was the clutter that made the theorem necessary.

There is a sharper way to say what survived. Two failure modes must remain visible in any serious attempt: an orbit that grows without bound, and a cycle that is not 4-2-1. The warehouse mentioned them and then wandered. Wandering is allowed in a private brain. Wandering becomes fraud when the page starts to feel like a finished research object. I do not accuse past-me of fraud. I accuse past-me of confusing a research object with a storage object. Storage can be huge. Research objects should be able to die in a page or two when they are wrong.

Another survivor: the willingness to keep code and computation next to intuition. Even in the cluttered season I was running checks, writing scripts, staring at streaks. That habit mattered later when Mersenne odds and L-bad families stopped being anecdotes and became witnesses. The warehouse did not invent the witnesses. It kept me in contact with numbers long enough that when the obstruction arrived, I recognized it as a finding instead of a mood.

Cringe mountain includes accumulation

I have used the phrase cringe mountain for the climb through public awkwardness: saying the work out loud before it is polished, admitting dead ends, refusing the highlight reel. Warehouse days belong on that mountain. Confusing accumulation with argument is a form of cringe. It is also a form of courage once you publish it, because the alternative is to pretend you always wrote sparse, sharp notes. You did not. I did not. I built a private cathedral of toggles and called the square footage progress.

There is a kinder reading that I still allow. The appetite was real. Jet lag and curiosity and a life that needed a hard problem can produce a page that tries to hold meaning and money and math at once. I do not want to sneer at that person. I want to edit him. Editing means keeping the questions and discarding the theater. Editing means noticing that a sixty-thousand-character dump can be archived without being worshipped. Editing means remembering that later, when the bounded-k energy died, the death was cleaner because pressure-testing had already named the two failure modes. Some of the warehouse contained the tools that would eventually dismantle the warehouse's favorite hope.

That is the only romance I will allow here. Not that the clutter was secretly wise. That the clutter contained questions sharp enough to survive their own surroundings. Survive means they can still be asked after the monetization toggle and the spirituality toggle are moved to their proper shelves. Survive means they still hurt a little, because they demand a verdict.

The opposite move: open notebook

The page you are reading is the opposite move. It is not sixty-six nested sections pretending to be one proof. It is a dated field note with a status label. Note, not theorem. Worked on a specific day. Published later with the rest of the open notebook so the chronology of the climb stays visible. The May entry about what died and what remains can sit ahead in time. The July entry about going beyond two coefficients can sit further ahead. This November day sits behind them as a warning label: volume is not clarity.

Open does not mean dumping the whole archive onto the internet. That would be another warehouse, only public. Open means choosing the residue and writing it in a voice that can be checked. It means saying when a day was heavy and unproductive in the mathematical sense. It means refusing to claim Collatz is solved because a private page got long. It means refusing to claim priority over residue-only obstruction literature when our closed class is look-ahead windows. It means letting Ugly Windows carry the human surface of the obstruction while the formal draft waits for a literature pass before arXiv.

I keep returning to the two failure modes because the warehouse day kept almost returning to them and then walking away into another room. Unbounded growth. Nontrivial cycles. If a scroll cannot speak to those, it is incomplete, no matter how pretty the toggles look. That sentence has to stay loud across years. It stayed loud enough that when the Lyapunov plan finally met Mersenne streaks and L-bad families, I could recognize a real death instead of inventing another room to postpone it.

Publish the ugly middle. That is the rule this entry exists to enforce. The ugly middle includes warehouse days. It includes overclaimed novelty. It includes spirituality placed too close to lemmas. It includes monetization anxiety. It includes the later small results that cleaned the board. If Going Home is about returning, then returning includes coming back to the messy page and saying what it was without flinching.

Why this day still earns a public stamp

Because people who only see the obstruction might think the path was always sparse and sharp. It was not. Because people who romanticize private notebooks might need a counterexample from inside one. Because I need the reminder myself. The next time a project gets heavy, I want this entry to be reachable. More rooms are not more proof. A heavier page is not a shorter climb. The questions that survive are the work. The rest is storage.

I also publish it because Going Home has always been two projects sharing a name. One project is a mathematical attempt with honest negative results in a look-ahead window class, parallel to other 2026 obstruction notes that attack residue certificates near minus one. The other project is a human notebook about awareness, home, and the future redeeming the present as metaphor. The warehouse day mixed them until neither could breathe. Separating them is adult. Keeping the memory of the mix is honest.

If you are reading this as a stranger, take the practical moral and leave the biography if you want. Practical moral: when your research page starts to feel like a city, ask which rooms exist only to postpone a verdict. Then open the hard room. Write the smallest sentence that can be false. Check it. If it dies, record the death. If it lives, keep pressure on it. Do not celebrate the skyline.

If you are reading this as me in a future year, remember the archive size without worshipping it. Sixty-six sections. Hundreds of kilobytes. Research dumps that could swallow an afternoon. None of that proved Collatz. None of that needed to. What it needed to do was fail productively enough that a cleaner notebook could be born. This is that cleaner notebook's memory of the day before the cleaning felt possible.

End of the field stamp. No theorem. No solved conjecture. Only a dated refusal to confuse a warehouse with a proof, and a promise to keep publishing the middle even when the middle is heavy.
