Pressure-testing

If an argument only works when numbers behave, it is not an argument for all n. Two failure modes: unbounded growth, and cycles that are not 1-4-2-1.

Tiago Santana · open notebook

February 24, 2025 was not a day for inventing a prettier formula. It was a day for trying to break my own framing before the integers did it for me in public. Intuition feels like progress until you ask it to survive an adversary. If a story only works on nice numbers, it is not a story about every positive integer. Collatz does not care that your favorite examples descend politely.

I had spent the middle of February naming tools: mega-step, valuations, look-ahead window, candidate energy. Naming creates attachment. Attachment creates softness. Softness is how a notebook turns scaffolding into scripture. So I ran a session against myself. Not as self-hate. As quality control. If I could not say what would falsify the approach, I did not have an approach. I had a mood with symbols.

Here is the checklist I actually used. Break the frame. Name the two failure modes. Refuse the cheap assumptions. Demand a skeleton that can carry contradiction. Keep a warning example on the desk. Remember later what this discipline killed. Not drama. A method that stayed useful after specific formulas died.

Break your own framing

The first instruction was blunt: assume your favorite picture is wrong in the way failed Collatz attempts are usually wrong. Not wrong in a random way. Wrong in a patterned way. Too much reformulation. Too much average-case comfort. Too little contact with unbounded growth and bad cycles. If I could not locate those failure modes inside my own story, the story was entertainment.

Breaking the frame means asking rude questions early. What family of odd integers would make the look-ahead window look useless? What would happen if nu equals 1 for longer than my fixed depth? Where am I pretending a heuristic is a lemma? Which sentence only works if the reader already wants me to be right? Write those questions above the formulas, not below them as footnotes.

I also kept a practical checklist that sounds almost managerial because it had to. Be clear what you are proving. Formalize the idea, not just the feeling. Locate the hard part and attack that directly. Stress-test the skeleton of the argument. Make it presentable in the language of mathematics. Run internal checks before you show anyone. None of that is glamorous. All of it is cheaper than public correction after a loud claim.

There is a Brazilian-American operator version of the same rule. Before you pitch, red-team the pitch. Before you hire, ask how the hire fails. Before you trust a dashboard, ask what season breaks it. Going Home needed that operator reflex more than it needed another poetic caption about returning home. February 24 was me dragging the math notebook under the same light I use on companies.

Two failure modes, no third escape hatch

Almost every serious attempt that fails overlooks one of two possibilities or sneaks in an unjustified assumption about typical behavior. First: an orbit that grows without bound forever. Second: a nontrivial cycle that does not include 1. Those are the gates. Everything else is hallway.

So I wrote them down as non-negotiable. Anything that cannot speak to those two is incomplete, no matter how pretty the algebra looks. If I cannot point to a specific lemma that eliminates infinite ascent and nontrivial cycles for all n, I do not have a proof yet. That sentence has to stay loud. It has to stay louder than Omega, louder than energy, louder than the Santana Principle as life advice.

People hate how small the list is. They want a richer taxonomy so their partial progress can feel like a third category of success. Partial progress is real. It is also not a proof. Density theorems, computation to enormous bounds, conditional results, reformulations, and heuristic models can all be valuable without closing the gates. Pressure-testing begins when you stop asking whether a page is interesting and start asking whether the gates moved.

I needed that cruelty because Going Home has a philosophical track running beside the math track. Sufficient awareness guarantees return is a life operating rule I still use. It is not a substitute for the two failure modes. If I ever let the slogan answer the gates, the project becomes theater. Theater can move people. It cannot claim the integers.

The ninety percent trap

Most incorrect proofs spend ninety percent of the paper on reformulations and easy properties, and almost none actually blocking those two real failure modes. That observation is older than my notebook. I still had to write it in my own hand because I could feel myself drifting toward the trap.

Reformulation feels like work because the symbols get cleaner. Easy properties feel like work because lemmas accumulate. You can generate a sense of inevitability without ever touching the part that has killed better mathematicians than me. The red zone is not ignorance. The red zone is productive-looking avoidance.

My February energy program was already flirting with that zone. Inventory, inequalities, residue toys, reduced-form talk. All legitimate as scaffolding. Dangerous as a substitute for gate contact. Pressure-testing asked: if I deleted the first ninety percent of my notes, what remains that actually forbids an escaping orbit or a bad cycle? If the answer is vibes, stop drafting the victory lap.

This is also why I distrust manuscripts that sound like I computed a general formula and the only consistent solution seems to be one. Seems is not a proof verb. Consistent in the examples I checked is not a proof verb. The adversary is not required to find your tone persuasive. The adversary only needs one escaping trajectory or one bad cycle your argument failed to forbid.

Assumptions I refuse

I made an explicit refuse list. Taking limits without proving convergence. Treating integers like reals and then declaring victory. Assuming average contraction is enough. Proving something on modular classes and pretending that covers everything. Using computation as if a large checked range closed the case. Handing an adversary a story full of obvious and clearly and expecting them to nod.

Each refused move has a seduction story. Limits feel adult because analysis is adult. Real-variable metaphors feel powerful because calculus is powerful. Averages feel decisive because heuristics often predict the ocean correctly. Modular covers feel combinatorial and clever. Computation feels modern and empirical. Soft adverbs feel like confidence. Under pressure, each one becomes a way to skip the gates.

Average contraction deserves a special mention because Collatz heuristics love it. Maybe typical steps shrink in log scale. Maybe almost all orbits behave. Interesting. Not enough. A proof for all positive integers cannot cash a check written on typical. The ugly streak is precisely the atypical object your averages washed out. If your argument needs the wash, it is not ready.

Computation gets the same hard love. Checking a vast initial range is valuable and can kill many fantasies. It does not close the universal claim. Anyone serious knows this and still feels the temptation to let a big verified bound do rhetorical work it cannot do logically. Refuse the rhetoric. Keep the data as data.

Modular cover-all is the trap closest to my residue toys from the energy week. Local classification is not global control. If even one residue class escapes the mechanism you love, or if the cover is incomplete in a way your notation hid, the gates remain open. Pressure-testing means searching for the missing class with more energy than you spend polishing the classes you already understand.

A skeleton that can survive

After the refuse list, I wanted a positive shape, something an argument would have to look like if it hoped to live. Define X carefully. Prove property A of X. Use A to show that any hypothetical unbounded orbit or nontrivial cycle leads to contradiction B. Therefore every n reaches 1. That skeleton is boring on purpose. Boring is harder to hide inside.

Notice what the skeleton forces. You must define the object without wishful fuzz. You must prove a property that does real labor. You must connect that property to both gates, not only to a lifestyle of descending examples. The therefore at the end is earned only if the contradiction branch was honest.

My candidate energy was an attempt to build such an X. Energy descent would have been a strong property A against unbounded growth, if it had been true for a fixed ansatz. Cycle exclusion would still have been needed. The later obstruction showed that particular A fails for fixed-window look-ahead rewards of the kind I wanted. That is not embarrassment. That is the skeleton doing its job. It turned a hope into a killable claim, then killed it.

If your story cannot be placed into some version of that skeleton, you are still in essay mode. Essay mode is allowed in Going Home. This whole notebook uses essay mode. Essay mode becomes malpractice only when it wears a proof costume for Halloween every day of the year.

Keep 5x+1 on the desk

I kept the 5x+1 map nearby as a warning. Change the triple to a quintuple in the obvious sibling rule and you can find cycles that are not the trivial home cycle people want. The warning is not a technical lemma about Collatz itself. It is a psychological instrument. Nearby maps can fail. Similarity is not safety. A method that would equally prove false cousins is diseased.

Pressure-testing asks whether your argument is secretly topology of wish: it would prove any map that feels like Collatz because it never used the real structure that distinguishes them. If your page never touches something hard enough that 5x+1 could break it, your page may still be in the ninety percent trap.

I do not treat 5x+1 as a magical talisman. I treat it as a sticky note on the monitor. There exist simple maps in the neighborhood that do not fulfill the homecoming fantasy. Therefore homecoming, if true for 3x+1, must use structure, not vibes. Structure is what the skeleton was demanding. Vibes are what the slogan track must not launder into lemmas.

How this discipline later killed bounded-k energy

I am writing from after the kill, so I can say what February 24 made possible without pretending the obstruction already existed that day. The discipline stayed when specific formulas did not. Later, the bounded-k energy died under exactly this kind of pressure. Fixed depth. Fixed rewards. Ugly streaks longer than the window. Cancellation. Log increase. Infinitely many witnesses. Method failure, not coefficient misfortune.

That death is what pressure-testing is for. Not to make you timid. To make your claims mortal in the right way. Immortal claims about Collatz are usually wrong or empty. Mortal claims can become small results. The obstruction is a small result. It closes a door. It does not open the prize.

Notice the continuity. February 9 gave the redemption intuition. February 17 built the energy scaffolding and overnamed part of it. February 24 installed the adversarial machine. Months later the machine ate the scaffolding. The intuition survived in a thinner form, as density reading and life posture, not as fixed certificate. The novelty language got corrected toward Terras-type honesty. The project got more true by getting less triumphant.

If I had skipped pressure-testing, I might have spent longer grid-searching alpha and beta, mistaking a structural kill zone for a tuning problem. That is another face of the ninety percent trap: endless easy computation around a dead ansatz. The refuse list and the two gates are cheaper than a year of polite plots.

What pressure-testing is not

It is not cynicism. Cynicism refuses to build. Pressure-testing builds, then tries to break, then builds again with a narrower head. It is not a demand that every private note be publication-ready. Private notes can be hungry. It is a demand that hungry notes stay labeled, and that labels get colder before claims get louder.

It is not a ban on philosophy. I still care about return, awareness, cringe mountain, ugly windows as human surfaces. Those tracks are allowed. They are simply not permitted to answer the two failure modes by metaphor. Metaphor can aim the flashlight. Metaphor cannot finish the proof.

It is also not a claim that I always obeyed my own rules. I did not. Early novelty language around look-ahead violated the spirit of underclaiming. Some energy notes talked like certificates while still being hunches. Publishing those corrections is part of pressure-testing the whole project, not only the formulas inside it.

Operator translation

Translate the two failure modes into company life and you get something painfully ordinary. Unbounded growth of mess: the orbit of problems never returns to a manageable home. Nontrivial bad cycles: the organization loops through the same crisis with new branding and calls the loop strategy. Most fake operating plans spend ninety percent on vision language and almost none on blocking those two.

The refuse list translates too. Vanity metrics as fake convergence. Treating people like frictionless variables. Assuming average team behavior covers the adversarial hire or the adversarial month. Checking a few good weeks and declaring culture solved. Saying obviously when the room goes quiet. If you lead anything real, you already know these failure modes in your body.

I include the translation not to make Collatz cute, but to explain why this discipline note belongs in Going Home rather than only in a math diary. The project was always double-exposed. Integers on one layer. Life on the other. Pressure-testing is one of the rare methods that helps both layers without pretending they are the same lemma.

Promise to future me

Publishing this note is a promise to future me. When the next beautiful ansatz arrives, ask the two questions first. Growth forever. Bad cycles. If the idea cannot speak, it does not ship as a claim. If it speaks only through averages, limits without convergence, modular almost-covers, or computation-as-proof, it does not ship as a claim either.

Future me will get tired and want a win. Tired is when the ninety percent trap feels like mercy. Mercy is how wrong papers get drafted. The promise is to put the skeleton on the whiteboard before the adjectives. Define X. Prove A. Force the contradiction on both gates. Or admit you are still in inventory.

Future me will also be tempted to treat a new obstruction or a new adaptive idea as more than it is. Pressure-testing cuts both ways. It kills false certificates. It also forbids inflation of real small results into destiny narratives. The obstruction work matters. It is not a Collatz proof. Say that every time.

I do not need this day to be heroic. I need it to be reusable. Break the frame. Guard the gates. Refuse the cheap moves. Demand a skeleton. Keep a false cousin on the desk. Let formulas die in daylight. That is the whole note. Everything else in Going Home gets healthier when this note stays louder than the slogans.

Field stamp

Status on this day: note. Not hunch about a new energy. Not small-result about an obstruction. A discipline stamp. The stamp later authenticated a kill. That is enough.

If you only remember one paragraph, remember this: an argument that cannot forbid unbounded growth and nontrivial cycles is not unfinished in a romantic sense; it is unfinished in a decisive sense. Romantic unfinished means keep exploring. Decisive unfinished means do not sell tickets to the premiere.

I will add a second memory paragraph for the days when the first one feels too abstract. On February 24 I imagined a hostile referee who only asks two questions and ignores my favorite examples. Where do you forbid escape to infinity. Where do you forbid a cycle that is not 1-4-2-1. Every time my draft answered with a diagram of typical behavior, the referee shook his head. Every time I reached for obviously, he underlined it in red. That imaginary referee is still more useful to me than most compliments.

A third paragraph, because discipline notes fail when they stay purely negative. Pressure-testing also tells you what to keep building. Keep building objects that can fail out loud. Keep building skeletons that name the gates. Keep building warning cousins like 5x+1 so your method has to touch real structure. Keep building human essays if they help you stay in the chair, as long as the essays do not countersign the lemmas. Construction and destruction are the same craft at different temperatures.

Going Home remains an open notebook because decisive unfinished work still deserves daylight when it is labeled. February 24 is the label maker. Use it on everything that wants to dress as inevitability. Especially use it on the ideas I love.

Closing the session

I ended that February session without a new formula and with a cleaner conscience. That trade is easy to undervalue when you are hungry for breakthroughs. It is harder to undervalue after you have watched a clean obstruction arrive months later carrying the same questions in its pocket.

If the energy week was about making redemption weighable, the pressure week was about making claims killable. Killable is a compliment. Unkillable prose about Collatz is usually fog. Fog can be beautiful on a mountain. Fog is a bad surface for landing a proof.

So here is the landing for this note. Two failure modes. A refuse list. A skeleton. A false cousin on the desk. A promise not to ship silence about the gates as if it were progress. Later the bounded-k dream died under that regime, and the project got more honest. That is the win available on February 24. Not Collatz solved. A standard installed.

I keep a short version on a mental index card. If it cannot speak to escape and bad cycles, it is not a proof. If it needs averages, soft limits, napkin moduli, or a big compute range to sound finished, it is not a proof. If it would prove a false cousin just as easily, it is not a proof. Everything else can still be worth writing, studying, and loving. It just has to wear the right label.

When I return to the integers now, I still feel the old hunger. Hunger is fine. Hunger without pressure-testing is how notebooks become myth factories. I would rather keep the smaller, sharper practice: break your framing before the world does, and let every beautiful ansatz earn the right to survive the two gates or die where we can all see the body.
